I have realized over a period of time:
- Healthy Gut=Clear & Happy Skin.
- Pooping effortlessly every single day & a colorless pee help me maintain a less splodgy skin.
- Oil based cleansers, exfoliating toners, mineral makeup etc etc can ONLY play a small role in making me look presentable.
- Green veggies, healthy fats, loads of water, exercise are my only keys to “younger looking skin”.
- Green juices , Broths and Digestive Bitters help me with my hydration levels.
I can go on and on but this book by Ms. Kimberly Snyder kind of hits the nail on the head. LITERALLY.
You may say : Oh, not another celebrity endorsed nutrition book!
Well, it is just a common-sense book really. But for a person like me who GOOGLES for advice on nutrition and ailments, it is a sort of a guide book to all things healthy and presents concise information on beauty foods. I do not like the term “Detox” in the title really because if you eat properly, you are in turn aiding a healthy digestive system and hence pooping and “detoxing” regularly.
Who is it for : For everyone who believes that the BODY IS A TEMPLE
The Beauty “Detox” Foods has easy recipes to follow. I did make some of smoothies, dips and sauces. I am in the process of making some kimchi. Some of the ingredients may/may not be easy to procure. But she does mention substitutes.
Is it a fun read? Not really. Can’t expect a nutritional book to be one. It is NOT preachy. I have referred to this book on a number of occasions especially when i feel bloated, stuffy and i am breaking out :-(.
It has rekindled my romance for food. I do not think of food as being a means to fill my stomach. I have started to feed my soul. 😀
To aid my digestive process i try and consume the bitters and i do feel it curbs unwanted cravings.
“Hair of the Dog” : Napiers Best British Bitters (Napiers is a Scottish herbalist who have been around from the 1860’s—-So they know what they are doing)
Why is it called the “Hair of the Dog” ? It is a colloquial expression— it means alcohol that is consumed with the aim of lessening the effects of a hangover 😀 😀 Counterproductive Really!!!! (Most of the bitters are made from herb extracts in alcohol)
What is a Bitter?
Napiers bitters are made from extracts of Gentian root, Ginger root, Meadowsweet, Silver Birch, Dandelion, Milk Thistle and Peppermint
Gentian Root : One of the most bitter substances in the world that stimulates the organs to absorb and assimilate the nutrients. You may have noticed this effect when you have eaten a Bitter Gourd ( a very common vegetable eaten and despised 😦 in Asian cuisine). So when I eat a bitter substance, the first thing I do is salivate. The effect of a Gentian Root is the same :It stimulates my digestive tract and hence curbs my sugar cravings 😦
Meadowsweet: an anti-inflammatory herb for stomach aches, gastritis, headache (especially the ones we get with a hangover), diarrhea, acid reflux. It is rightly named the Queen of the meadow. 🙂
Silver Birch: This herb helps in the production of digestive fluids. There are days when i feel bloated , this gem of a herb acts as a diuretic. It removes any excess water from the body just like a cucumber and celery would do.
Milk Thistle is particularly good if you have a hangover or digestive issues.
Dandelion: Often looked upon as a “weed of the lawn“, this herb is commonly used in herbal teas and is excellent for digestion. It is the first pit stop for bees on the arrival of spring 🙂
Peppermint: I have always wondered why mint is used in a lot of meat dishes. Clearly it enhances the taste but it also soothes the tummy.
Who is it for: If you fall in one of the categories such as Party gal, Meat eater, Acid refluxer (just made that one up), for people who look and feel bloated it is worth a try!!!!!
I usually consume this when i have one too many poppadoms 😀 / lentil soups. The list can be endless especially when you are enjoying Easter bunnies !!!! If you are trying to avoid alcohol this bitter can be consumed by mixing it in hot water. (The alcohol used for extraction will evaporate after 5 minutes)
So if you have had a night of partying, have been gorging on enormous amounts of goodies and treats, you can just give your intestines a small helping hand by consuming these wonderful bitters.
