I am on a never ending mission to achieve perfect blemish free skin. And to aid my madness, I always keep my eyes open for cleansers/balms/cleansing oils — so many different words that serve the same purpose— CLEANSING the FACE in order to feel good and look presentable !!!!
I came across handmade Freyaluna skincare when i had a wonderful and stress-free shopping experience on Adore Naturals. I was intrigued by their beautiful jars and cute font. Yes, i am a sucker for adorable fonts!
I did some more research and this is what i came up with :
FREYALUNA (Love yourself naturally)
Founded when : 2005
Based in : North Wales (love home grown brands)
Who : Sami Blackford (certified herbalist and aromatherapist– this skincare has been born out of her personal skin battles)
Targeted audience : Skin loving obviously :-)/ Acne prone/ Mature/ Sensitive/ dry/ exhausted/ Eczema prone.
I was curious about the meaning of the name FREYALUNA and when i asked Sami (the founder) about it she said : FREYA means a Norse Moon Goddess . Hence the name FREYALUNA. I also found out that it means a ‘Noble Woman’. It truly does make you feel like a royal 🙂
So how did it fare in my eyes :
Overall Performance : A+++ (Creamy cleanser that turns into an oil on application) Almost feels like good ol’ oil cleansing (You know, the times when as a new green beauty newbie, you start with the OCM technique 🙂 .. you get exactly the same feeling but with the extra aromatherapy experience)
Without makeup performance : A++ On dry skin this creamy cleanser has the consistency of smooth peanut butter. I wanted it to be more spreadable than what it is. So i spritzed some rosewater over it. It felt so good to massage with this creamy cleanser.
With makeup performance : A++ I use minimal makeup. But i do like to use my Lily Lolo mineral foundation in order to look presentable. :-).
So when i tested this on a lightly made up face sans the mascara this is what it felt like. The creamy cleanser felt like an oil on application but i couldn’t really see whether it was lifting the makeup off with the oil. I knew it was dissolving the makeup but i wasn’t sure if the cleanser had truly removed all the makeup.
I then used my trusty microfiber washcloth (i will be coming up with a post on microfibers soon….it truly deserves the high praises….) immersed in warm water to gently swipe the mineral foundation away. The microfiber looked pretty brown with all that foundation. So i was convinced that the cleanser did do the job however, in order to remove the nagging doubt i did a double cleanse using another light balm cleanser.
Frankly, there was no need to do a double cleanse BECAUSE the creamy cleanser had indeed done a great job!!!!
Affordability : A+ Mid-budget
Green-washing : None at all. Free from parabens, alcohol, formaldehyde, SLS, Phenoxyethanol, Petrochemicals, Phthalates — In short FREE FROM CHEMICALS. It truly is LOVE IN A JAR!!!
Breakouts : None – atleast for me. If you are allergic to essential oils then this is not for you. BUT if you are allergic to beeswax THEN this might be the product for you. It has candelilla wax. So this is an added bonus for me.
Ingredient profile : GREAT because the first two ingredients are high in linoleic acid. So acne prone skin or otherwise would truly benefit from oils high in linoleic acid. Sunflower oil :Linoleic acid- 70% Grapeseed oil : Linoleic–70.6% **
Aroma profile : smells of lavender ,geranium, rose essential oils.
Ingredients : Vitis Vinifera (grapeseed) oil, Helianthus annuus (sunflower seed) oil, rosewater, Euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, sodium bicarbonate, Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) extract, Rosa gallica (rose) extract, Chamomillis vulgaris (chamomile) extract, essential oil of Pelargoniun graveolens (geranium), benzyl alcohol, salicylic acid, glycerine, sorbic acid. (taken from the website)
Spill proof / Hygienic: Potion in a jar is not convenient at all because for clumsy people like me there is a greater possibility of spillage or in very rare circumstances breakage. I have had to dip various fingers (not the same finger obviously) to keep the product makeup free :-))) So that has been my major niggle so far ! BUT Freyaluna have revamped their packaging now. It comes in the form of a pump bottle. So all in all, it is a winner with the packaging and performance!
This is how i grade my products : (pragmatically thought out grading)
A+++ : Superb product, Worth the buy !!!!!!
A- : Maybe, it would work for you, but it did not make my heart sing.
B : Maybe a try , and if you have the money to squander!
C : Straight to the bin !!! ( I doubt you will see such a product on this beauty journal because i will be researching my products well. And even if the shit hits the fan..(pardon my french) , I will still not give it C because i think somebody out there is manufacturing his/ her products and putting his/her heart and soul into it and i just cannot rip apart their efforts.
So, has anybody out there tried Freyaluna ?? Would be interested to hear!
Also i would love to hear about any similar balms/ potions/ cleansers which may or may not break the bank 🙂 .I would love to hear your thoughts on home grown brands as well.
** If you need to know about linoleic acids there is a great blog called Minimalist Beauty. There is an awesome post on the same.
